Karen Watson International Business Development

Turn your international business conversations into real opportunities.

I help life sciences companies prepare for strategic client meetings, negotiations and international business development. With 30 years of experience, I bring seasoned commercial judgement to situations where the stakes are real.

Why preparation matters

A well-prepared presentation is not always enough.

In high-stakes business discussions, the difference often lies in how you communicate your value, respond to objections and understand what is said — or left unsaid — around the table.

A poorly judged answer, a misread client signal or a vague next step can slow a decision and weaken a relationship.

  • Clarify your commercial value and key message
  • Anticipate questions, objections and competing interests
  • Spot signs of interest and tell a promising conversation from a genuine opportunity
  • Strengthen your credibility in difficult moments
  • Move discussions towards decisions and clear next steps

Practical commercial support

Make the moments that matter count.

Drawing on 30 years of business development experience in the life sciences industry and as a native English speaker, I help clients position their commercial strategy, anticipate questions and challenges, and agree clear, effective next steps — particularly in international meetings conducted in English.

The goal: prepare better for the decisive moments and move commercial opportunities forward.

My background

30 years of business development experience in clinical research

After 30 years in business development within the clinical research industry, I now work independently with organisations expanding beyond their home markets but not consistently converting international opportunities into clients.

Often, the challenge is not capability. It is how value is communicated and how teams perform in real client interactions.

How I work

Specific preparation. Not generic training.

My approach is practical and hands-on. I work alongside executives and teams to prepare for a specific meeting with a specific client — not to deliver theory or a generic training programme.

With 30 years of global clinical research business development experience, I bring commercial judgement to the message, the audience and the likely dynamics in the room.

This is focused support for a specific meeting — not a training programme.

My experience spans:

  • Commercial strategy and strategic account development
  • Proposals, presentations and bid defences
  • Contract negotiation and closing deals
  • Client communication and governance meetings
  • Coordinating multinational, cross-functional teams
  • Bridging scientific expertise, client expectations and commercial goals

A clear, practical process

Prepare with purpose.

Every engagement is tailored to the upcoming situation, the people involved and the commercial outcome you want to achieve.

  1. 01

    Understand the situation

Clarify the context, stakeholders, goals and desired outcome.

  2. 02

    Refine the message

Sharpen the positioning, value proposition and structure of the discussion.

  3. 03

    Pressure-test

Test the content against realistic questions, objections and scenarios.

  4. 04

    Improve and rehearse

Use direct feedback to adjust responses and key messages.

  5. 05

    Support the meeting

If required, support during the meeting or a debrief afterwards.

Flexible engagement

Support that fits the situation.

From focused preparation for one important meeting to ongoing fractional business development support. Online or hybrid, with an international reach.

Format A · Most common

Short, focused engagement

Typically 3–5 sessions over 2–3 weeks.

  • Diagnosis and message clarity
  • Structure, content and delivery
  • Rehearsal and pressure-testing
  • Optional final preparation or debrief

Format B · Intensive

High-stakes, fast-turnaround support

For very senior or particularly critical situations.

  • One or two longer working sessions
  • Rapid focus on the core message and audience
  • Commercial and client-perspective challenge
  • Preparation for difficult questions and moments

Format C · Ongoing

Fractional business development support

For organisations that need experienced BD input without recruiting a full-time senior resource.

  • Support with commercial strategy and priorities
  • Strategic account and opportunity development
  • Preparation for important client conversations and negotiations
  • Practical support tailored to your team and market goals

Scope and level of involvement can be shaped around your needs.

Beyond fluent English

Read the situation. Move the relationship forward.

Speaking English well is not the same as negotiating confidently in English. In high-stakes international meetings, commercial effectiveness means recognising what is being said, what is left unsaid and what needs to happen next.

I help teams prepare for real client conversations in English: communicating value clearly, handling unexpected questions and objections, and responding with confidence under pressure. This is commercial preparation — not English-language training.

  • Recognise implicit client signals and distinguish a promising conversation from a genuine opportunity.
  • Ask the right questions before a negotiation.
  • Prepare for objections, competing interests and difficult conversations.
  • Recognise when a positive meeting is unlikely to progress.
  • Build trust and establish credibility.
  • Negotiate confidently and move commercial relationships forward.

First conversation

A decisive meeting to prepare for? A critical client situation to unblock?

A client relationship under strain? A difficult negotiation? A commercial opportunity losing momentum?

I bring an experienced, independent perspective to help you assess the situation, prepare the next step and work towards a better outcome.

Let’s talk about your context, your goals and how focused support could help you move your international opportunities forward.
